Chapter Thirty-Three

* * *

"Shit."

Lyla held her bleeding side and knelt in an expanding pool of blood, looking around with wide eyes for the enemy she knew hid in the shadows of the woods. Her head swiveled side to side, trying to pick out the distortions in the air her hidden enemy created, but she had no luck.

Two halves of a large, red-furred lizard-dog hybrid with thick skin and strangely resistant fur lay at her feet. Its large tail, nearly four meters in length that stemmed from its spine, rested limply against the ground. That tail had caused her issue when she'd first faced the strange enemy, but she'd figured out how they used them in time.

Even though the red-furred enemy lay dead, she stayed vigilant and twitched at every sound. She didn’t know the meaning of fear. She felt rage at the cowardly enemy who employed hit and run tactics even though its kin had already fallen. If she were in its place, she wouldn’t stop attacking until her enemy was dead.

Lyla groaned as she stood, grinning as she caught sight of a distortion in the air, “Come out, coward! Your death is inevitable.”

She didn’t know if they could even understand her, but her haughty tone was universal. Her arrogance crossed languages. But it appeared her taunt failed as the enemy continued slinking about.

“Fine, if you won’t come to me,” she crouched forward and her silvery wings appeared behind her, “then I’ll come to you.”

She crossed the distance in a fraction of a second, stabbing forward with her glaive. A shriek of fear echoed out and Lyla smelled urine. That only deepened her grin as her brows furrowed in concentration.

A grey, scaled humanoid appeared and skid to a stop only a hair away from where her glaive pierced the air. Its slit pupils focused on her and it keened in fear and rage. It stabbed forward with its incredibly sharp claws, but Lyla had anticipated the blow, deflecting it in the same motion as she pulled her glaive back, cleaving clean through its torso.

She watched on as the life faded from its eyes and its body fell forward,its legs crumbling underneath it. She wiped away the blood and slumped against a nearby tree. Lyla felt euphoric and she let the heady rush of battle take her to her happy place.

However, her Oathbindings burned at her euphoria, reminding her of her enslavement to an ideology she didn’t support. She spat in disgust and her brows furrowed in rage. She stood straight and radiated pride in defiance of the Oath as she stood above the corpse of her slain enemy. The Oathbindings increased in intensity until she keeled over in blinding agony, vomiting profusely on the ground in front of her.

After the pain and nausea resided, she placed a hand on her side where she'd bled to find her regeneration had thoroughly healed her while she’d rested against the tree. Her torn , bloodstained clothes showed a new scar for her efforts against these strange hybrids.
